{"id":50455,"date":"2024-03-07T08:53:41","date_gmt":"2024-03-07T07:53:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hateaid.org\/?p=50455"},"modified":"2025-03-31T12:35:23","modified_gmt":"2025-03-31T10:35:23","slug":"hatred-against-women-in-politics-insults-online-acceptable-to-every-third-person","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hateaid.org\/en\/hatred-against-women-in-politics-insults-online-acceptable-to-every-third-person\/","title":{"rendered":"Hatred against women in politics: Insults online acceptable to every third person"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>One third<\/strong> of respondents <strong>show understanding when people insult female politicians online<\/strong> out of dissatisfaction, even if they would not do so themselves. This is the result of a <strong>new survey<\/strong> conducted <strong>by YouGov on behalf of HateAid<\/strong>. In order to counteract the normalisation of hatred against politically active women, both partners are now launching the new joint project &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/hateaid.org\/en\/hate-speech-against-women-in-politics-close-the-gap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Close the gap: Securing women&#8217;s voices in politics<\/a>&#8220;. With research projects, specialised counselling and awareness campaigns, they tackle digital violence against women in politics in the long term and sustainably. Hatred has far-reaching consequences: more and more women are withdrawing from political involvement. This endangers representation and participation for more than half of the population \u2013 and is therefore not only a problem for those affected, but concerns our society as a whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/hateaid.org\/en\/hate-speech-against-women-in-politics-close-the-gap\/#yougov-survey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">representative survey<\/a> draws a shocking picture. While an overwhelming majority (86 percent) wishes for a respectful interaction with each other \u2013 also online, when it comes to respect towards women in politics, reality looks completely different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>43 percent<\/strong> think that women in politics <strong>have to endure attacks<\/strong> online because it is part of their job.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>45 percent<\/strong> agree that women in politics themselves <strong>contribute to attacks <\/strong>on social media when they make certain statements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>One in three people<\/strong> (34 percent) shows <strong>understanding when people insult <\/strong>female politicians online out of dissatisfaction, even if they themselves would not be hostile to them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Anna-Lena von Hodenberg, CEO of HateAid<\/strong>, comments: <em><br><\/em>\u201eRape threats and sexualising deepfakes: female politicians are increasingly telling us that they are considering leaving politics because of this. They can no longer subject themselves and their families to endure these hostilities. As a result, we are not only losing important voices in politics, but also the fundamental right of all people to be able to engage in politics freely and without fear.\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HateAid is countering this democracy-endangering development with the project &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/hateaid.org\/en\/hate-speech-against-women-in-politics-close-the-gap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Close the gap: Securing women&#8217;s voices in politics<\/a>&#8220;. It includes the following components:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Generating new insights<\/strong>: research into the extent and impact of digital violence against female politicians and developing possible policy approaches with the research partners <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hfp.tum.de\/en\/globalhealth\/forschung\/projekte\/understanding-detecting-and-mitigating-online-misogyny-against-politically-active-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Technical University of Munich<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsg.ox.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Blavatnik School of Government<\/a> at the University of Oxford;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Empowering women<\/strong>: enabling politically active women through specialised counseling and tailored training;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Raising awareness<\/strong>: campaigns to inform decision-makers and empower women politicians;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Improving the conditions<\/strong>: changes in legislation, law enforcement, platforms and civil society at EU and federal levels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The special feature of the project is that civil society and science work closely together. Today, the research report commissioned by HateAid from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsg.ox.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Blavatnik School of Government at the University of Oxford<\/a> is published. The report &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/hateaid.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/blavatnik-report-strengthening-democracy-reducing-threats-women-politics.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Strengthening democracy by reducing threats to women in politics<\/a>&#8221; presents existing laws and solutions for the protection of women in politics for civil society, research and politics. This will provide the basis for further policy recommendations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the survey<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The data used is based on an online survey conducted by YouGov Deutschland GmbH, in which 2,151 people took part between 16 February and 20 February 2024. The results were weighted and are representative of eligible voters in Germany. All of the results mentioned are from a five-point scale. The results for &#8220;strongly agree&#8221; and &#8220;somewhat agree&#8221; were combined here. It advocates for human rights in the digital space and stands up against digital violence and its consequences at both social and political levels.
