Among other additions, the committee proposed to introduce <strong>requirements for user-generated pornographic content<\/strong>. They want to tackle image-based sexual abuse on porn platforms \u2013 a growing problem across Europe. HateAid has turned to experts in the fields of internet law and image-based sexual abuse to assess these proposals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Therefore, Professor Clare McGlynn, Durham University, and Professor Lorna Woods, University of Essex, based on a commission by HateAid, have authored the expert opinion \u201cImage-Based Sexual Abuse, Porn Platforms and the Digital Services Act\u201d.&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Their 4 central findings were:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Non-consensual content on porn-platforms is easily accessible, often even on the front pages of the most popular porn platforms.\u202f<\/li><li>Victims of image-based sexual abuse report life-shattering and life-threatening harms.<\/li><li>Regulations for porn platforms are needed to help the victims.<\/li><li>DSA can guarantee minimum standards to protect from image-based sexual abuse.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link\" href=\"https:\/\/hateaid.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/ImageBasedAbuse-and-DSA-Expert-Opinion-McGlynn-and-Woods-17-Jan-2022.pdf\">Download the full expert opinion here<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fear of intimate pictures leaked online<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor McGlynn and Professor Woods reveal that the data is scarce, but the glimpses that are available foreshadow devastating conditions. In 2020, <strong>over 100,000 images of Irish women and girls were leaked online<\/strong>, with similar websites uncovered in Italy with thousands of users sharing sexual images without consent. And even worse: Many women do not even know that their images have been taken or shared without their consent.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The consequences of image-based violence are severe. Victims whose images have been published on porn platforms without consent report life-shattering and life-threatening harms. <strong>Research shows that non-consensual content on porn-platforms is easily accessible, often even on the front pages of the most popular porn platforms.\u202f<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-uagb-section uagb-section__wrap uagb-section__background-color uagb-block-cfdb5c74\"><div class=\"uagb-section__overlay\"><\/div><div class=\"uagb-section__inner-wrap\">\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201eWhen the videos appeared on PornHub it ruined my life, <strong>it killed my personality<\/strong>, it zapped the happiness out of me. It brought me almost two years of shame, depression, anxiety, horrifying thoughts, public embarrassment and scars.&#8221;<\/p><cite> <strong>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itv.com\/news\/2021-06-18\/pornhub-sued-by-dozens-of-women-alleging-it-profits-off-rape-and-videos-of-children\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ITV<\/a><\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Regulations are needed to help the victims<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Porn Platforms must be obliged to <strong>take action against this common abuse<\/strong>, the researchers state. The missing self-regulation by porn companies is failing victims. Furthermore, the availability of image-based sexual abuse material on porn sites legitimises and normalises abuse. They also assess that the proposed provision is likely <strong>human rights compliant<\/strong>. Provision recognises significance of victims\u2019 privacy rights, a State\u2019s obligation to protect psychological integrity and that online abuse restricts women\u2019s freedom of expression. Factors that weigh heavily in any balancing exercise.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The suggested user verification processes would assist law enforcement and likely <strong>reduce non-consensual content disseminated<\/strong>.
